The Great Myspace Idiocracy

idiocracy

I’d already made up my mind that Myspace was not only ugly, elitist and irritating, not to mention not user-intuitive, but this sealed the deal. A major multi-million dollar website run by one of the biggest media conglomerates should not have any typos, let alone on the account settings! I’m on Facebook these days. More fun, and much prettier!

  1. Ugh, you’re so right — that’s beyond unacceptable! I do happen to have a page on there, only because my brothers back in the U.S. insisted that I make one to keep in touch with me… I should talk them into Facebook now.

  2. Amen to that! I loathe myspace. What do you mean by “elitist”, though? that’s not my impression of it but perhaps I’m missing something…

speaking of elitism, I’m up for seeing HP when you are, if you haven’t seen it yet…

  3. Maitresse - Elitist in the sense that I hate all that top friends bullshit. It seems ridiculous when you have all these friends you like and have to rank them in row one two three… etc. That’s BULLSHIT (have to say it again and in caps) and I always hated it.

Ready for HP when you’re ready.

  4. I had the same question — I wouldn’t say elitist, because that implies that you have to be someone to join.

I think the word you’re looking for is assholist.

:) I think I’m going to start signing my emails TFF (for Top Friend Forever!!! eheehe!!!!)

  5. People seem to think that elitist means specifically thinking that there is some kind of standardized idea of power associated with elite (be it fame or monetary power). That is not at all what I mean, obviously. Elitist is an adjective that would apply to anything where there is a intimation of selectivity that is not only exclusive but an extension of power relations. I think the TOP FRIENDS function perfectly fits this idea.

What’s nice about Facebook is that, since everyone uses their real names, you have to actually know someone to put them in. Myspace is such bullshit, with all these random doorknobs hassling you to be friends, people you will never speak to or care about in your life except to pack your friends list. If they have a top friends ranking system it’s to winnow out the people you might actually know from all those lightweights. Lame.
