Brittany

Having just come back from a week long vacation in food paradise Brittany, I am too bloated and sated to write. Needless to say, hundreds of little critters met their doom in that sunny sandy paradise and I will never be able to eat oysters happily in Paris again. Actually, I ate so much everyday that I had nightmares almost everynight, from whelks whinging to clams screaming. Oh, just thinking about that lobster punching its claw repeatedly against the lid while I held it down in pure sadistic glory makes me smile. All the hot saunas and all the nipple-erecting waters in the world won’t change the fact I put an inch on the waistline.

  1. “Oh, just thinking about that lobster punching its claw repeatedly against the lid while I held it down in pure sadistic glory makes me smile. ”
One day, you may want to do an interesting meditation. Sit down, close your eyes, and spend fifteen minutes getting yourself into the head of the lobster. And then at the end of the meditation, go back and read what you wrote. Would love to hear what you have to write in reflection as you seem to be quite the craftsman with words.

  2. Well, the whole thing with sadism is that it presupposes that I understand the power relationship and appreciate being on the upper hand of it. Now, should I ever decide to be a masochist, I’ll hug that lobster with all the tears of a crocodile.

  3. Oh, in your head you understand the power relationship well enough alright. For a giggle you are passing off not sadism for humour when really it is obviously not sadism but just indifference.

Indifference is rampant and understandable, because everyone one around us is doing it.

It is arguable that we all draw the line somewhere, in order to justify the luxuries we wish to claim that we enjoy at the expense of others.

Nevertheless, justice and fairness is about consistency. If you claim that the concern of an animal’s freedom from suffering is not something you need to consider because you say so, then when another harms you or those you care about but thinks it’s okay because of their say so… that is the kind of co-existence you have ultimately ratified.

You are not a sadist, nor will you become a masochist, but in one way or another one day you may become the lobster. When that time comes, I hope for your sake that those who might spare you do not share your attitude to the well-being of others. I’d hope even more that if you are spared, that you start to put yourself in the position of others, even in the position of others whose fate you believe at that moment you would never be likely to share.

PS: I only heard of this site because my friend, mojito, referred me to your upsetting comments.

  4. “I woke up in pain and faced with the gruesome sight of exposed white flesh and peeled back skin….It was difficult to walk without pain. Showers are a horrific experience.” This is how you related your experience with a Bali kiss. And you never decided to be the masochist in that tale, rather, you were the victim of circumstance much like the lobster.
When you were in such pain, the the chemist you visit show you any compassion for your pain, were your friends supportive and caring towards you? Again, it would be an interesting exercise in humanity to sit down for 15 minutes, and compare the “horror of a shower” compared with the horror of being boiled alive.

  5. I had no idea so many people were imagining themselves as lobsters. Really people, let’s not overstretch those muscles. Why not try imagining yourself as a vegetable instead?
